چکیده

The accurate estimation of measurements covariance is a fundamental problem in sensors fusion algorithms and is crucial for the proper operation of filtering algorithms. This paper provides an innovative solution for this problem and realizes the proposed solution on a 2D indoor navigation system for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) that fuses measurements from a MEMS-grade gyroscope, speed measurements and a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor. A computationally efficient weighted line extraction method is introduced, where the LiDAR intensity measurements are used, such that the random range errors and systematic errors due to surface reflectivity in LiDAR measurements are considered. The vehicle pose change is obtained from LiDAR line feature matching, and the corresponding pose change covariance is also estimated by a weighted least squares-based technique. The estimated LiDAR-based pose changes are applied as periodic updates to the Inertial Navigation System (INS) in an innovative extended Kalman filter (EKF) design. Besides, the influences of the environment geometry layout and line estimation error are discussed. Real experiments in indoor environment are performed to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The results showed the great consistency between the LiDAR-estimated pose change covariance and the true accuracy. Therefore, this leads to a significant improvement in the vehicle’s integrated navigation accuracy. OPEN ACCESS Micromachines 2015, 6 197

A Hierarchical SLAM/GPS/INS Sensor Fusion with WLFP for Flying Robo-SAR's Navigation

In this paper, we present the results of a hierarchical SLAM/GPS/INS/WLFP sensor fusion to be used in navigation system devices. Due to low quality of the inertial sensors, even a short-term GPS failure can lower the integrated navigation performance significantly. In addition, in GPS denied environments, most navigation systems need a separate assisting resource, in order to increase the avail...

GPS-LiDAR Sensor Fusion Aided by 3D City Models for UAVs

Outdoor positioning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) commonly relies on GPS signals, which might be reflected or blocked in urban areas. In such cases, additional on-board sensors such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) are desirable. To fuse GPS and LiDAR measurements, it is important, yet challenging, to accurately characterize the error covariance of the sensor measurements. In this p...

An Adaptive Sensor Fusion Method with Applications in Integrated Navigation

The Kalman filter (KF) is a form of optimal estimator characterized by recursive evaluation, which has been widely applied to the navigation sensor fusion. The adaptive algorithm is one of the approaches to prevent divergence problem of the Kalman filter when precise knowledge on the system models is not available. Two popular types of adaptive Kalman filter are the innovation-based adaptive es...
